Ondulacao Crochet Cowl
Ondulacao Crochet Cowl
Rhythmic, simple, beautiful.
With its meditative pattern, satisfying texture and soothing colour palette, Ondulação is a lightweight yet smooshy accessory that can be worn almost year round. Choose from a cowl - worn loosely and wrapped twice - or a long, skinny scarf.
CONSTRUCTION
Crocheted flat, this pattern alternates intricately textured ripples (“ondulação” means ripple in Portuguese) with simple, elegant stripes worked in slipped stitches. If making the cowl, the first and last rows are seamed together at the end.
YARN
Nurturing Fibres SuperTwist Sock (fingering; 100% superwash merino wool; 320 m / 350 yds per 100g)
Scarf: 1 skein Driftwood (A), 1 skein Conch Shell (B)
Cowl: 1 skein Monette (A), 2 skeins Lunar (B)
To improve drape and ensure the sides run straight, this cowl/scarf must be blocked before wearing.
Yarn Alternatives
Use any smooth, soft fingering or sport weight yarn that will block well. A 100% wool or wool-silk blend will result in the best drape. Avoid plant-based and synthetic fibres if possible.
Yardage required
Scarf: 300m in (A) + 320m in (B)
Cowl: 320m in (A) + 400m in (B)
ONE SIZE
Scarf - W14.5 cm x L185 cm / W5.75” x L73“
Cowl - W21 cm x L140 cm / W8.25” x L55”
Width is easily adjusted by working a different number of starting chains, as long as you begin with an odd number. Final yardage will vary.
HOOKS, NEEDLES + NOTIONS
3.5mm and 4mm hook, or as required to obtain gauge
Wool needle
GAUGE
20 sts x 17 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4x 4” worked over Ripple Pattern, using smaller hook
20 sts x 32 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4x 4” worked over slipped stitch striping, using larger hook
Gauge should be measured after blocking.
Note that the slipped stitch striped sections will stretch more over time than the ripple stitch sections. Storing your scarf/cowl flat will help to prevent it stretching too much. Even if the sides don’t run perfectly straight, I’ve found this is not a visible problem when the scarf/cowl is being worn.
