Harvested Crochet Shawl

Harvested Crochet Shawl

Their fingers snaked around stalks of golden wheat, soon to be harvested. Storm clouds gather overhead, dark and ominous yet with the promise of sweet relief. Time to turn back to the house. They could smell the coming rain, and the heady tang of rhubarb jam bubbling on the stove…

Harvested is a light shawl that is perfect for wearing indoors in the colder months, or for jazzing up an outfit on cool days and summer evenings. The colours are rich, full, glossy; They call to mind armfuls of summer bounty and waning, golden light.

Construction-wise, I threw the rulebook out of the window. I wanted even, horizontal stripes without visible increases in the body. The construction, though unorthodox, allows just that and is straightforward to boot - no stitch markers needed (unless you want to!). All the stitches are a variation of the Double Crochet (Single Crochet in US terms - conversion chart included in pattern).

Harvested uses three 100g skeins of fingering weight yarn. It provides a great opportunity to play around with colours, try out those special skeins you might have been saving, and still have a bit left over for another project at the end.

ONE SIZE
Approx. 150 cm / 60“ wide x 45 cm / 18” deep

CONSTRUCTION
This crescent-shaped shawl is worked flat, starting with a long row of foundations stitches near the bottom and working up in progressively longer rows. After the top row is finished, you go back to round off the bottom by working into the foundation row.

YARN
Kettle Yarn Co. Beyul Fingering
(fingering weight; Baby Yak/Silk/Merino; 366 m / 400 yds per 100g skein)
A: Brass (dark yellow) - 1 skein
B: Bronze (warm grey) - 1 skein
C: Rhubarb (dark pink) - 1 skein

Yarn Alternatives
This shawl is designed for a fingering weight yarn. Any fibre with a soft handle and good drape will work, but to ensure the texture of the stitches “pops” a glossy yarn is recommended. Some yarns may need blocking more than once to open up the stitches fully.

Yardage required
A: 305 m / 335 yds
B: 300 m / 330 yds
C: 220 m / 240 yds

HOOKS, NEEDLES + NOTIONS
3mm, or as required to obtain gauge
Wool needle

GAUGE
Paired DC: 19 sts x 21 rows = 10 cm / 4”
DC in FLO: 19 sts x 24 rows = 10 cm / 4”
Waffle st: 19 sts x 18 rows = 10 cm / 4”
NB: All swatches should be measured after wet blocking.
Obtaining the correct gauge is not crucial for this project. However, to ensure the sides of the shawl don’t wobble, stitch-gauge should be as consistent as possible. If your gauge differs, this may affect final yardage.
