Here you can buy original crochet patterns, learn new techniques, and dip into stories of life in the South of Sweden. Welcome!
This pattern first appeared on my old blog in July 2015, as part of the Crochet meets Patchwork blanket. The Crochet meets Patchwork Blanket is an ongoing project that is inspired by scrappy, patchwork quilts. It provides a great opportunity to play with colours, try different motifs and learn new crochet stitches.
All the patterns for the squares used in this blanket are free - some are mine, some are by other designers (always credited; if you spot one I've credited to the wrong person please get in touch). You can find details of the project, including step-by-step tutorials to my own patterns, on the Project Page. A complete ebook guide will be available in due course.
You can also find all the patterns and tutorials mentioned below on the Crochet meets Patchwork Pinterest Board, and follow along with my progress on the Emmy + LIEN instagram account.
This fun square looks a little like a cross between a sunflower and an anemone, and forms part of the Crochet meets Patchwork blanket. The 'petals' are achieved by making clusters of Double-Treble Crochets together. Don't be afraid of these clusters if you've never tried them - I've included pictures of every step. The motif is then squared off and finished with a traditional granny treble row and dc border.
If you would like to download and print this pattern, you can purchase a beautifully laid-out PDF copy from my Ravelry store. The pattern costs just €1.50 excl. VAT (about $1.50 USD depending on the exchange rate), and you will be able to choose between US terms or UK terms. By paying this small fee, you help me keep Emmy + LIEN afloat!
For this tutorial I've used DMC Natura Just Cotton, which is a 4-ply yarn. I personally love cotton because it's neat and washes well, but you could use any yarn you like. If you use a heavier yarn, remember you'll need a bigger hook and that your final square will be larger too.

double-treble crochet cluster - DTC cluster
slip stitch – sl.st.
Round 1
With colour A and using the larger hook, make a starting chain of 6, then make a circle by working a sl.st into the first ch.
Round 2
Make 2-TC cluster: Begin with a chain 2 (counts as first TC).
YO and insert hook into circle. YO again and pull through the first two loops on your hook. YO again and pull through the remaining two loops of the hook. First 2-TC cluster completed.
Ch 3, then make the second 2-TC cluster: YO and insert hook into circle. YO again and pull through the first two loops on your hook.
DO NOT FINISH this TC, but start making the second one in the pair. YO, insert hook into circle, YO, pull through the first two loops on the hook. You should now have two half-done TCs and three loops on your hook. YO and pull through all three loops to finish the cluster.
Repeat this step [chain 3, followed by a 2-TC cluster] four more times, then ch 3 and join to the top of the first 2-TC cluster with a sl.st. The finished round should consist of six clusters or "petals".
Round 3
We are now going to make a cluster of 3-DTC, starting with a Standing DTC - see photographs. If you wish to work a chain start, attach yarn and ch 3 instead.
Wrap colour B around your hook 3 times (counts as 3 loops) and insert into any ch 3 space.
YO and pull through the first two loops on your hook.
YO again and pull through the first two loops on your hook. DO NOT FINISH this DTC but start making the second one: wrap the yarn around the hook twice, YO and pull through the first two loops, YO again and pull through the first two loops. DO NOT FINISH this DTC but start making the third one: wrap the yarn around the hook twice, YO and pull through the first two loops, YO again and pull through the first two loops. YO again and pull through all remaining loops to finish the cluster.
Ch 2, then make the second 3-DTC cluster in the same space. * [Ch 3, 3-DTC cluster, ch 2, 3-DTC cluster] in next chain space; repeat from * until you’ve gone all the way round. Join to the top of the first 3-DTC cluster with a sl.st. The finished round should consist of twelve clusters.
Round 4
Attach colour C in any ch 2 space between two 3-DTC clusters, then DC 2 in the same ch 2 space. * In the next ch 3 space, DC 5. In the next ch 2 space, DC 3; repeat from * until you’ve gone all the way round. Join to the top of the first DC with a sl.st.
Round 5
With colour A, make a STC around the Round 4 DC above the tip of the second 3-DTC cluster of any cluster pair of Round 3, then TC 2 in the same space. Look at the arrow below for the stitch placement:
Skip 2 st, then HTC 3 in the next st. Skip 3, DC 3 in the next st.
Skip 2, HTC 3 in the next st. Above the next Round 3 cluster tip, [TC 3, ch 3, TC]. *Skip 2, [HTC 3, skip 3, DC 3, skip 2, HTC 3] in the next st. Above the next Round 3 cluster tip, [TC 3, ch 3, TC 3]; Repeat from * until you’re back at the first Round 3 cluster tip. TC 3, ch 3 and join to the STC with a sl.st.
Round 6
This is a standard granny square round. With colour D, make a STC in any Round 5 space. TC 2 in the same space. TC 3 in the next space. On the corners: [TC 3, ch 3, TC 3]. Continue like this until you’ve gone all the way round, then join to the STC with a sl.st.
Round 7
Switch to the smaller hook. Attach colour B to any st. and ch 1. DC 1 in each st. On the corners: [DC 2, ch 1, DC 2]. Continue like this until you’ve gone all the way round, then join to the ch 1 with a sl.st.
That's it! Now it's time to sew in and trim any ends on the reverse side and block the square by laying it out on a foam block or mat, spraying with water until soaked, and pinning it into shape. Leave it to dry completely (away from direct sunlight).
